Returning phone calls

In our personal lives, returning phone calls is a judgment issue. The better you know someone, the more likely you are to call them later or earlier than outher individuals. Also, the more likely you are to text message them.

In business, when is it appropriate to call someone after hours? Are we required to tell them at work that we will call them later on that night? Is it proper to call a coworker late at night? And how late is too late; especially when you're trying to get to know them.

I think that it is a judgement call. For the majority of the time, you are required to get to know people if you want to succeed in business. I would say that people need to preface this by saying something in person at work like, "Hey I'm gonna call you later on tonight about this project." This would allow you to know when to call them, and then call them with confidence. As far as the timing issues go, I would say never to call anyone past 9:00 at night, unless you know it is ok.

I agree with Jason. You should not call anyone after 9:00 p.m., unless he/she approves otherwise. I find it difficult holding a long conversation with anyone over the phone because of my hectic schedule. I really have difficulty returning calls. Although, I think that this is about to change because I have changed jobs, and I am not taking as many hours in school. I think that I am about to have a social life, again, and that feels great! Maybe I can return some of those phone calls, now.
